Jovonie Tejero has a successful track record of teaching and elevating students of low income and color for the past decade. Mr. Tejero attended the University of Nevada Reno to study with the accomplished, Lincoln Chamber Society cellist, Dmitri Atapine, to pursue a Bachelor’s in Music Education . This fall, he will be starting his Masters in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
As the eldest of three, he grew up in a family of musicians and was inspired to take on private teaching and mentoring roles as early as thirteen years old. At age sixteen, he gave group cello lessons for underserved children in his community. By eighteen, he was already known as an excellent young educator for the classical strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass). He has been awarded the Director’s Choice Award and the Future Music Teacher Award in his senior year at the 12 time Grammy-Signature award winning school, Las Vegas Academy of the International Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, for his dedication and commitment to mentoring and fostering his community through music education.
For the past decade, he has served as a para professional in multiple elementary, middle and high schools within the state on Nevada. He has served as a co-chair for the Clark County School District Honor Orchestra and a sectional coach for Las Vegas Youth Orchestra for four years. Outside of the school district he has served four years as the only cello professor at the Las Vegas branch of El Sistema: Foundation to Assist Young Musicians, where he taught cello group classes and private lessons to students of low income and color. Mr. Tejero has also been admitted as the first ever, all Strings Instructor, at the prestigious Nevada School of the Arts where he teaches and advocates to provide high quality education, specifically towards students of color and low income all over the Las Vegas valley.
Lastly, Mr. Tejero has recently left the Clark County School District to become the first and only string specialist on faculty as the Director of Orchestras at Pinecrest Conservatory, where he will be teaching grades 5-12.
